English - Etymology

From Middle English _coude_, from Old English _cūþe_, past indicative and past subjunctive form of _cunnan_ (“to be able”). The addition of the silent 'l' was likely a misappropriation attempting to normalize with modal verbs _will_/_would_ and _shall_/_should_. However, while the letter l was historically pronounced in the latter two, _can_ never did have an l sound in it.
