English - Etymology

From Middle English _Duch_ (“German, Low Countryman”), from Middle Dutch _dūtsch_, _duutsc_ (modern _Duits_ (“German”)), northern variant of _dietsc_ (compare modern _Diets_ (“Dutch language”)), from Proto-Germanic _*þiudiskaz_ (compare German _Deutsch_ (“German”), Old English _þēodisc_ (“of the people”)), from Proto-Germanic _*þeudō_ (“people”), from Proto-Indo-European _*tewtéh₂_. See also Derrick, Teuton, Teutonic. Middle Dutch _duutsc_ is the result of i-mutation (umlaut) typical of central dialects (Brabantine) while _dietsc_ shows the merger of _iu_ with _io_ and weakening to [iə] typical of coastal dialects (Flemish). This led to doublets which split in meaning during the Renaissance.
