English - Etymology

From Latin _Germanus_, _Germani_ (“the peoples of Germania”), as distinct from _Gauls_ (in the writings of Caesar and Tacitus), and of uncertain ultimate origin (possibly Celtic/Gaulish). Not related to the Latin adjective _germānus_ (whence the English words _german_ and _germane_, through Old French). Attested since at least 1520. Replaced the older terms _Almain_ and _Dutch_ in English.
