From Old English _Norweg_, _Norþweg_, from Old Norse _Norvegr_ (“north way”), _Norðvegr_, from _norðr_ (“north”) + _vegr_ (“way”), contrasted with _suðrvegr_ (“south way”), i.e. Germany, and _austrvegr_ (“east way”), the Baltic lands. Norwegian (1607) is from Medieval Latin _Norvegia_, with the -w- from _Norway_.
