From Middle English _sche_, _hye_ (“she”), from earlier _scho_, _hyo_, _ȝho_ (“she”), a phonetic development of Old English _hēo_, _hīo_ (“she”), from Proto-Germanic _*hijō_ (“this, this one”), from Proto-Indo-European _*ḱe-_, _*ḱey-_ (“this, here”). Cognate with English dialectal _hoo_ (“she”), Scots _scho_, _shu_ (“she”), West Frisian _hja_ (“she”), North Frisian _jü_ (“she”), Danish _hun_ (“she”), Swedish _hon_ (“she”). More at he. Despite the similarity in appearance, the Old English feminine demonstrative _sēo_ (“that”) is probably not the source of Middle English forms in _sch-_. Rather, the _sch-_ developed out of a change in stress upon _hío_ resulting in _hió_, spelt _ȝho_ (_ȝh_ = _hȝ_, compare _wh_ = _hw_, _lh_ = _hl_, etc.), and the _h_ was palatalised into the _sh_ sound. Similar alteration can be seen the name _Shetland_, from Old Norse _Hjaltland_; _ȝho_ is the immediate parent form of Middle English _scho_ and _sche_.
