Cognate with Old Frisian _filmene_ (“thin skin, human skin”), Dutch _vel_ (“sheet, skin”), German _Fell_ (“skin, hide, fur”), Swedish _fjäll_ (“fur blanket, cloth, scale”), Norwegian _fille_ (“rag, cloth”), Lithuanian _plėvē_ 'membrane, scab', Russian _plevá_ 'membrane', Greek _πέλμα_ (pélma, “sole of the foot”). More at fell. Sense of _a thin coat of something_ is 1577, extended by 1845 to the coating of chemical gel on photographic plates. By 1895 this also meant the coating plus the paper or celluloid.
