From Middle English lower case letter _v_ (also written _u_), from Old English lower case _u_, from 7th century replacement by lower case _u_ of the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc letter _ᚢ_ (u, “ur”), derived from Raetic letter _u_.
Before the 1700s, the pointed form _v_ was written at the beginning of a word, while a rounded form _u_ was used elsewhere, regardless of sound. So whereas _valor_ and _excuse_ appeared as in modern printing, _have_ and _upon_ were printed _haue_ and _vpon_. Eventually, in the 1700s, to differentiate between the consonant and vowel sounds, the _v_ form was used to represent the consonant, and _u_ the vowel sound. _v_ then preceded _u_ in the alphabet, but the order has since reversed.

Originally the accusative/dative form of _jij_/_gij_, from Middle Dutch _u_, from Old Dutch _iu_, from West Germanic _*iwwiz_, variant of Proto-Germanic _*izwiz_, dative/accusative of _*jūz_, from Proto-Indo-European _*yū́_. Compare West Frisian _jo_, Low German _jo_, _ju_, English _you_, German _euch_. The use as a nominative stems from an original genitive _uwe edelheid_ (“your gentlehood”), which was later shortened to _U E._ and finally to _u_. See also jou.
