Alteration of _templet_, probably from French _templet_, diminutive of _temple_ (“a weaver's stretcher”), from Latin _templum_ (“a small timber, tie-beam, a purlin”), from Proto-Indo-European _*temp-_ (“to pull, stretch”). Alteration of second syllable due to analogy with _plate_. Cognate with Faroese _tamba_ (“to stretch out, relax”), Icelandic _þamb_ (“a stretched, bloated, or extended belly”).
