From Latin _encyclopaedia_, from Ancient Greek _ἐγκύκλιος παιδεία_ (enkúklios paideía, “the circle of arts and sciences, curriculum”), from _ἐγκύκλιος_ (enkúklios, “circular, rounded, round”), from _κύκλος_ (kúklos, “circle”) + _παιδεία_ (paideía, “the rearing of a child, education”), from _παιδεύω_ (paideúō, “rear a child”) +‎ _-ίᾱ_ (-íā), from _παῖς_ (paîs, “child”).
