From Middle English, from Old English _norþ_, cognate with various Germanic counterparts such as Dutch _noord_, West Frisian _noard_, German _Nord_, Danish _nord_, all from a Proto-Germanic _*nurþrą_, and cognate with Greek _νέρτερος_ (nérteros, “infernal, lower”) possibly all ultimately from a Proto-Indo-European _*ner-_ (“left, below”), as north is to the left when one faces the rising sun.
