From Middle English _sory_, from Old English _sāriġ_ (“feeling or expressing grief, sorry, grieved, sorrowful, sad, mournful, bitter”), from Proto-Germanic _*sairagaz_ (“sad”), from Proto-Indo-European _*sayǝw-_ (“hard, rough, painful”). Cognate with Scots _sairie_ (“sad, grieved”), West Frisian _searich_ (“sad, sorry”), Low German _serig_ (“sick, scabby”), German dialectal _sehrig_ (“sore, sad, painful”), Swedish _sårig_.
