From Middle English _every_, _everich_, which is made up of Old English _ǣfre_ (“ever”) + _ǣlċ_ (“each”): thus equivalent to _ever_ +‎ _each_. Furthermore, _ǣfre_ itself comes from _ā_ _in_ _fēore_ ("ever in life"), and _ǣlċ_ from _ā_ _ġelīċ_ ("ever alike").
