English - Etymology

From Old English _frīġedæġ_. Compound of frīġe and dæġ "day", corresponding to late Proto-Germanic _*Frijjōz dagaz_ (“day of Frigg”). Compare West Frisian _freed_, Low German _Freedag_, Dutch _vrijdag_, German _Freitag_, Danish _fredag_. Old Norse _Frigg_ (genitive _Friggjar_), Old Saxon _Fri_, and Old English _Frig_ are derived from Common Germanic _*Frijjō_.[5] Frigg is cognate with Sanskrit prīyā́ which means "wife."[5] The root also appears in Old Saxon fri which means "beloved lady", in Swedish as fria ("to propose for marriage") and in Icelandic as frjá which means "to love." A calque of Latin _dies Veneris_, via an association of the goddess Frigg with the Roman goddess of love Venus.
