_ab-_ +‎ _normal_. First attested in 1835, replacing the earlier _anormal_ and even earlier _abnormous_, from Latin _abnormis_ (“departing from normal”), from EITHER (_ab-_ (“away from”) + _norma_ (“rule, norm”)), OR Ancient Greek _ἀνώμαλος_ (anṓmalos).
