Originally a genitive form of _alway_, from Middle English _allwaye_, _alle wey_, from Old English _ealneġ_, _ealneweġ_ (“always, perpetually”, literally “all the way”), from _ealne_ + _weġ_ (accusative case), equivalent to _al-_ (“all”) +‎ _way_, or _all_ +‎ _-ways_. Cognate with Scots _alwayis_ (“always”), Low German _allerwegens_ (“very often”, literally “all ways'”). More at all, way.
