From Middle English _arengen_, _arrangen_ (“to draw up a battle line”) from Old French _arengier_, _arrangier_ (“to put in a line, put in a row”) from _reng_, _rang_, _ranc_ (“line, row, rank”), from Frankish _hring_ (“ring”), from Proto-Germanic _*hringaz_ (“something bent or curved”), from Proto-Indo-European _*(s)ker-_ (“to bend, turn”). Akin to Old High German _(h)ring_, Old Frisian _hring_, Old English _hring, hrincg_ (“ring”), Old Norse _hringr_ (“ring, circle, queue, sword; ship”). More at _ring_
