From Late Middle English _benefytt_, _benefett_, alteration (due to Latin _bene-_) of Middle English _benfet_, _bienfet_, _bienfait_ (“good or noble deed”), from Anglo-Norman _benfet_ (“well-done”), Middle French _bienfait_, from Old French _bienfet_, _bienfait_ (“foredeal, favour”), from past participle of Old French _bienfaire_ (“to do good, do well”), from _bien_ (“well”) + _faire_ (“to do”), modelled after Latin _benefactum_ (“good deed”).
