Probably from Old English, from a diminutive form of Proto-Germanic _*gurwijaz_ (compare North Frisian _gör_ (“girl”), Low German _Gör, Göre_ (“child of either sex”), dialectal Norwegian _gorre_, dialectal Swedish _garre_, _gurre_ (“small child”)), from Proto-Indo-European _*ǵʰer-_ (“short”) (compare Old Irish _gair_ (“short”), Ancient Greek _χρεώ_ (khreṓ, “need, necessity”), _χρήσθαι_ (khrḗsthai, “to need”), Sanskrit _ह्रस्व_ (hrasva, “short, small”)).
