Originated 1325–75 from the Middle English verb _giden_ or noun _gide_, from the Old French verb _guider_ or noun _guide_, from Old Provençal _guida_, from _guidar_, from Germanic, from Frankish [script needed] (*witan, “to show the way”). Akin to Old English _witan_ (“to know”); see Proto-Indo-European _*weyd-_.
