From Middle English, from Old French _estoire_, _estorie_ (“chronicle, history, story”) (French _histoire_), from Latin _historia_, from Ancient Greek _ἱστορία_ (historía, “learning through research, narration of what is learned”), from _ἱστορέω_ (historéō, “to learn through research, to inquire”), from _ἵστωρ_ (hístōr, “the one who knows, the expert”), from Proto-Indo-European _*weyd-_ (“see, know”). Compare _story_. Attested in Middle English in 1393 by John Gower, _Confessio Amantis,_ which was aimed at an educated audience familiar with French and Latin.
