From Middle English _mangelen_, from Anglo-Norman _mangler_, _mahangler_, frequentative of either Old French _mangonner_ (“to cut to pieces”) or _mahaigner_ (“to mutilate”), of Germanic origin, for which see mayhem. Compare also Old High German _mangolōn_ (“to suffer loss, be deprived”) (> German _mangeln_ (“to lack, mangle”)). Alternate etymology derives _mangle_ from Middle English _*mankelen_, a frequentative form of _manken_ (“to mutilate”), from Old English _mancian_, _bemancian_ (“to maim”). More at mank.
