From Middle English _market_, from Old English _market_ (“market”) and Old Northern French _markiet_ (Old French _marchié_, modern _marché_); both ultimately from Latin _mercātus_ (“trade, market”), from _mercor_ (“I trade, deal in, buy”), itself derived from _merx_ (“wares, merchandise”), from the Italic root _*merk-_, possibly stemming from Etruscan, referring to various aspects of economics. Cognate with Old Frisian _merked_ (“market”), Old High German _markat_ (“market”), Old Norse _markaðr_ (“market”).
