From Middle High German _niedlich_, _nietlich_ (“well-pleasing, in-demand”), from Old High German _nītlīche_ (“desirable”), derivative of _niot_ (“desire”), from Proto-Germanic _*neudaz_ (“desire, drive, urge”). Cognate with Old Saxon _niudlīko_ (“zealously, carefully”), Old English _nēodlīċe_ (“eagerly, earnestly, carefully, zealously, diligently, sedulously; greatly”). More at needly.
