Dutch - Etymology 1

From Middle Dutch _niwet_, _niet_, from Old Dutch _*niowiht_, _niewiht_, from _nio_ (“never”) + _wiht_ (“thing, creature”). The former in turn derives from Proto-Germanic _*ne_ (“not”) + _*aiw-_ (“ever”) + _*wiht-_ (“thing”). It was originally a pronoun meaning "not a thing", and was later used to reinforce a regular negation. The pronomial meaning was lost in Middle Dutch. English _not_, and its older forms _naught_ and _nought_, were formed in the same way, but "not" also lost its sense as a pronoun and became a negation adverb as in Dutch. ADVERB NIET * Not, no: used to express negation. _NIET storen!_ Do NOT disturb! _Dat is NIET waar._ That is NOT true. ANTONYMS * wel DERIVED TERMS * niet eens * nog niet
