From Middle French _prefixer_ (verb) and Late Latin _praefixum_ (noun), both from Latin _praefixus_, past participle of _praefīgō_ (“I (fix, fasten, set up) in front”, “I fix on the (end, extremity)”) (from _prae-_ (“before”) + _fīgō_ (“I fix”, “I fasten”, “I affix”)).
