Middle English _remainen_, from Old French _remain-_, stressed stem of _remanoir_, from Latin _remaneō_, _maneō_, from Proto-Indo-European _*men-_ (“to stay”). Replaced native Middle English _beliven_, _bliven_ (“to remain”) (from Old English _belīfan_ (“to remain, stay”)) due to confluence with related Middle English _beleven_ (“to leave behind”), with which it merged.
