From Middle English _sense_, from Old French _sens_, _sen_, _san_ (“sense, reason, direction”); partly from Latin _sensus_ (“sensation, feeling, meaning”), from _sentiō_ (“feel, perceive”); partly of Germanic origin (whence also Occitan _sen_, Italian _senno_), from Old Frankish _*sinn_ (“reason, judgement, mental faculty, way, direction”), from Proto-Germanic _*sinnaz_ (“mind, meaning”). Both Latin and Germanic from Proto-Indo-European _*sent-_ (“to feel”). Compare French _assener_ (“to thrust out”), _forcené_ (“maniac”). More at send.
