English - Etymology

From Middle English, from the Old French _estandart_ (“gathering place, battle flag”), from Old Frankish _*standhard_ (literally “stand firm, stand hard”), equivalent to _stand_ +‎ _-ard_. Alternative etymology derives the second element from Old Frankish *_ord_ (“point, spot, place”) (compare Old English _ord_ (“point, source, vanguard”), German _Standort_ (“location, place, site, position, base”, literally “standing-point”)). More at stand, hard, ord.
