From Middle English _ordre_, from Old French _ordre_, _ordne_, _ordene_ (“order, rank”), from Latin _ōrdinem_, accusative of _ōrdō_ (“row, rank, regular arrangement”, literally “row of threads in a loom”), from Proto-Italic _*ored(h)-_ (“to arrange”), of unknown origin. Related to Latin _ōrdior_ (“begin”, literally “begin to weave”). In sense “request for purchase”, compare _bespoke_.
