From French _Flandres_, from Dutch _Vlaanderen_ (pl.), from Middle Dutch _Vlander_, from Old Frisian, from Proto-Germanic _*flaumdra_ ‘waterlogged land’, from _*flaumaz_ ‘flowing, current (water)’ (compare Old High German _weraltfloum_ (“transitoriness of life”), Old Norse _flaumr_ (“eddy”)), from Proto-Indo-European _*plow-m_- ‘flow’ (compare Ancient Greek _plŷma_ (“dishwater, washing water”)). More at flow. "Waterlogged" refers to the mudflats and salt marshes common to coastal Flanders.
