English - Etymology

In Old English as _Bryttisc_ (“Britons”) [1]. The spelling with single _-t-_ appears in the 13th century under the influence of Latin _Britannia_, but spelling with _-tt-_ persists alongside _-t-_ during the 13th to 17th centuries. In reference to the island of Great Britain from ca. 1400 (Latin _natio Anglica sive Britannica_, _Brittisshe occean_ 1398, _the Britishe nacion_ 1548). As a noun, referring to the British people, British soldiers, etc. from ca. 1600.
