Contraction of older _deau_ (“right; south”), from Proto-Celtic _*dexso_ (“right”). Cognate with Cornish _dyhow_, Breton _dehou_, Irish _deas_. The sense "south" comes from the fact that the south is on the right-hand side of a person facing east.
