From Medieval Latin _cultivātus_, perfect passive participle of _cultivō_ (“till, cultivate”), from _cultīvus_ (“tilled”), from Latin _cultus_, perfect passive participle of _colō_ (“till, cultivate”), which comes from earlier *_quelō_, from Proto-Indo-European _*kʷel-_ (“to move; to turn (around)”). Cognates include Ancient Greek _πέλω_ (pélō) and Sanskrit _चरति_ (cárati). The same Proto-Indo-European root also gave Latin _in-quil-īnus_ (“inhabitant”) and _anculus_ (“servant”).
