Latvian - Etymology

Originally a compound, from an old third-person pronominal element _*i-_ (whence also Latvian _it_, q.v.) and the (reflexive) pronominal element _pats_. An original _u_-stem _*īpatus_ became _īpats_ (“peculiar”) (more frequently _īpatnējs_), while a parallel _i_-stem form yielded _īpašs_ (such pairs were frequent, sometimes suriving to the present day; cf. e.g. _plats_ and _plašs_). The meaning has varied throughout time, from “its own,” “self” (17th century) to “s/he/it him/her/itself” (18th century) to finally the modern sense of “special” (19th century). Cognates include Lithuanian _ypatùs_ (“special, peculiar, different”).
